Insulin was patented by the University of Toronto in 1923. The patent allowed pharmaceutical companies to make insulin and use it as a brand name. Eli Lilly got a non-exclusive licensing contract, and for a while, insulin was a reasonably affordable medicine. But something else happened instead. It's ads time. We're back. Ads has happened.
