The Evolution of Wings

The modern word wing didn't come along until the late 12th century. It is generally an unknown origin of where a wing came from. Moths have soundproof scales on their wings to avoid bat detection. Blowflies use their wings as a fence to carve out a space on animal carcasses. Butterfly wings shape shift at the microscopic level to adjust to changes in wind speed.
