John McQuater is a professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. He says languages are very specific ways of seeing the world, of perceiving reality. Many languages make a distinction between things that are accidents and things that are intentional actions. It's an incredible tragedy that we're losing all of this linguistic diversity, he says.
