Levi sent five more boatloads of gold to New York between August and December, making a grand total of the year over $80,000 or $2 million in today's currency. Though the city had financial ties to New York and other urban centers, the panic of 1855 was, for the most part, a local phenomenon. "It just a reminder that, you know, instead of trying to time when economic booms are busts," he says.
