The Importance of Consent in a Political Economy

From a liberal point of view, there doesn't seem to be something obviously wrong with consensual, freely chosen commodification of sex. Paid surrogacy has become a global business; villages in India are catering to the global market in paid pregnancy. But even if we satisfy ourselves that there's not coercion, that there is consent, we might worry that permitting paid contract pregnancy on a large scale would erode or undermine the ends.
