The Antidote to Standard Schooling Is Self-Directed Education

Self-directed education is how children through the great bulk of human history have learned. In our culture today, we can't just necessarily expect this to happen with all kids if we just send them out onto the street. We need conditions that in some ways mimic the hunter-gatherer band. And that's what a Sudbury School does. It provides an environment in which there's a number of adults who are doing adult-like things or kids over the whole age range. There's very little formal work required of them.
