How to Be a Journalist Working for a Magazine

I thought that the piece works well at the length that it was. Did you want to go deeper? Did you really want to do like a, you know, five, six thousand word piece? You say that wasn't the assignment. So how does it actually work as a journalist working for a magazine like that? Is it a collaboration between you and your editor or is it sort of top down?
