Howard Hughes's Life in Los Angeles in the 1920s
In the 1920s, fantasies created on sound stages started to bleed into off-screen life in Los Angeles. Howard Hughes' wife Ella would be stuck in this gossipy society bubble until he gave in to her near daily pleas to come home to Hollywood. He pledged to make his own hyper-realistic World War I flying movie, using at least two million of his own dollars with no help or interference from a Hollywood studio. Going in alone like this was not something that was done in late 1920s Hollywood.
