The Effect of Narratives on Empathy
If you can create narratives that allow the person to see that their aspects of the other like themselves, it can actually decrease the outgroup aspect in the sense that they potentially are more accepting or more empathic. This is the work of David Disteno and others. But here's the thing, it's very flexible. People can very flexibly include or exclude others. It's not like this is an indictment against religion, it's just in-group, outgroup, human stuff that we do.
