The Artisan in the Eighteenth Century

i was wondering if you could perhaps give us a brief over view of this history of the artisan as a figure and n artisnal as a concept. And perhaps outline some of the tensions and difficulties that arise from studying this category. I think one of the threads that we, a, we wanted to to pull out in the introduction was the kind of false distinction that didero and dalambert make between between makers and thinkers. This kind of rigid system that existed between gild artisans or academic, fine artist or scientist proved difficult to to transgress.
