Foucault on the Transition of a System of Punishment

Foucault talks about the transition of a system of punishment that was in place prior to the revolution. Most crimes were essentially violent and affected on persons' bodies, he says. And then the punishment was on the offender's body. This was done very publicly as an expression of the sovereign's power with the complicity of the public.
