Is Bartering a Good Metaphor for Negotiation?
Bartering is a great metaphor for negotiation, says the author. In order to trade one good or one service with somebody else, i have to need what they want and want what they have at the same time. That double coincidence of wants makes it quite difficult to reach an agreement over just one thing. When people barter, they think more creatively about other issues that might make a trade possible.
