The Meaning of Suffering
Suffering is a lawful thing, it's a terrible thing. And I think in the Christian thing there's a full recognition of that and maybe some kind of gentle, slow pathway through it. A lot of cult and fundamentalist stuff demands that you leave your intellect at the door before you walk in. One of the lovely things about the old Christian tradition is that theology is there to raise the hardest and most counter questions so nothing can be claimed that hasn't submitted itself to the critical vigilance of the intellect. There's a lovely kind of cold questioning and critique of the gifts of the heart which all means as well that I suppose the journey of faith is the journey of liberating ourselves from the unworthy
