The Stoics defined happiness as eudaimonia, which for the storyks was the perfection of character. So I think there's a real claim here that if you have the right frame of mind then you can be happy despite worldly misfortunes just by being a good person. And that happiness that you have is a happiness that be recognized as other people. There's a real causal claim here.
