The Viking Expansion - The Fourth Condition

Sail allowed the ship to move fast at least when there was wind but they also could switch over to rowing for tight maneuvering. Also lowering the mast not only took down the sail which is pretty standard on any sailing ship being able to lower the mast allowed for longer invisibility when approaching an enemy or approaching the shore. So these ships quickly emerged as sort of a early medieval equivalent of the rocket ship or the aircraft carrier of modern times The most advanced most sophisticated military vessel of their age. A fourth reason in addition to the social, the economic, the technological a fourth condition that made the Viking expansion possible was religious.
