The Function of Reason
The circumstances that determine the affections of the mind are contingency. And it's the contingencies of the encounters that affect us, which is for Hume how we begin through resemblance, contiguity and causality. Those are the three factors that sort of prompts the mind to make these general ideas based on the encounters we've had and extrapolate from them. This is what empiricism kind of means, in that sense, right?
