Tunnels Between Jersey and New York

There were tunnels already built. Two systems that pre date the holland tunnel. An engineer named de witt haskin attempted to link via tunnel between jersey city and lower manhattan for freight trains. In 18 80, 20 men died in a tunnel accident while they were constructing this. By 19 dred brooklyn and new york were part of the same city. So that made bridge construction over the east river even easier.
