The History of Libraries
The Library of Celsus was built as a tribute to Tiberius Julius Celsus Polymanis, who was the governor of the province of Asia. The Academy of Gundshapur in modern day Iran was home to the greatest library in the Sassanid Empire. When Constantine the Great established a new Roman capital in Constantinople, he also established the Imperial Library of Constantinople. In Western Europe, with the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity, libraries tended to be located in monasteries. One of the greatest monastic libraries in the world was located in the Abbey of St. Gaul in Switzerland.
