General Sherman issued special order number 15 reserving 400,000 acres of abandoned plantation land in coastal Georgia and South Carolina for black settlement. On April 9th Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered to Union forces in Appomattox, Virginia At long last the Civil War was over Two days later Lincoln stood on the White House balcony before a large crowd and declared that the future was fraught with great difficulty. But he would not live long enough to see it as John Wilkes Booth shot him dead at Ford's Theater.
