By 1885, Australia was the richest country in the world. I think something like one in 50 people from the British Isles had moved down under to pursue a new life. And what strikes me is all of your subjects were born during that period in the late 19th century. Did they have an intrinsic sense of being Australian and what it meant to be an Australian back then? They did feel Australian, which is perhaps surprising because most of them left Australia before federation. All identified as being Australian.
