What Happened in South Carolina?
In the early republic, there was more continuity than change in legal practice. This set of practices and ways of thinking about enslaved people became a templet rit. So looking at what happens in south carolina matters because it's real precedent for what happens in those areas that will eventually become cotton growing areas of the new republic. It just brings me back to this idea that legal categories and practices matter to a greater extent than we might think from the beginning.
