Hemoglobin in the High Altitude Mice

High altitude mice have hemoglobin that has a higher affinity. When oxygen gets into the blood, the amount of oxygen that bind to hemoglobin depends on the partial pressure of oxygen in the blood. The high altitude mice are just able to carry a lot more oxygen in their arterial blood than a low altitude mouse. And so for for us at sea level our hemoglobins balance both oxygen loading from air and oxygen unloading in the tissues.
