We've never defaulted on our debt, but we did last hit the ceiling back in 2011. The Treasury Department says our economy took months to recover. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has proposed a spending cap that will reduce overall government spending before raising that limit. But that does still require an agreement with Democrats in the Senate and perhaps more importantly with President Biden.
