The Coleman steam engine was invented in 1712. It only had one practical economic use, which was to pump water out of deep coal mines. From that single use case, essentially the whole modern world has grown. We have had 200 years of getting more energy efficient. And yet over that 200 year period with the exception of a COVID and a financial crisis we are using more energy than ever before as a global culture.
