Are There Different Kinds of Plates?
A plate is a curved cap which sits on top of the earth and it slides around. There are 12 major ones, all about 100 kilometres thick in some places. When plates meet each other, generally what happens is one slides underneath the other. The continents are sitting ontop of the plates like a passenger or like a life raft if you like.
