Carola Suarez is the director of the Immigration Initiative at Harvard. Immigrant children make up 27% of U.S. student population. She says learning English often takes prime focus in classrooms, leaving little room for support immigrant students may need to succeed. Many immigrants come from places where their parents have less education and they arrive here without a lot of education behind them.
