The Goal Gradient and Motivation

The idea that our motivation is affected by how close we are to completing a goal dates back to the early days of empirical psychology. And could you tell me a little bit about some of the early animal research that generated this theory back in the 30s if I've got my facts right? Exactly. So they'd run them down these runways over and over and over until the rat knew to expect the reward at the end. The finding was that they would actually run faster on the sections of the course that were closer to the food reward.
