The Council of 50
The Council of 50 was formed in March 1844 to protect the religious rights of Latter-day Saints. The name derived from the eventual number of Council members, although that number fluctuated over time. Members considered setting up their own government if they had to leave the United States. They used the word theocracy or theodemocracy to describe their intentions.
