The Cascade Effect of the Irish Famine
The food is there, it just doesn't go to the right people at the right time. The ridiculously stupid, short-sighted, racially prejudiced all of those things blend in to make a difficult situation, a catastrophe. It's unique in so far as these are set of circumstances that applied to Ireland in the 1840s. But each of these other things that you might compare it to have a unique set of circumstances which fold into total catastrophe.
