What's Going on in Jeremiah 30?
The Babylonian Empire conquered the city of Jerusalem, destroyed Solomon's temple and deported thousands of Jews in 6th century BC. Almost all Jews at the time believed that God had covenanted with them to always protect their city and always protect their temple. This gave them a tremendous sense of security in the midst of a very violent world. The reason for the exile of God's people was that the people had profoundly disobeyed Torah,. That is God's law, and had built a society that was oppressive, exploitative, and fundamentally idolatrous.
