What Is the Importance of a Pardon?

A half dozen members of congress asked president trump for a pardon in conjunction with their actions to try to keep him in power after he lost the election. Common sense dictates that we see it as an indication of guilt, or at least fear of prosecution. The fact that there were so many republican members who were involved in extra parliamentary action in order to secure donald trump's overthrow is just alarming.
