The Loudness Wars

Twenty Thousand Hertz

CHAPTER

Why Dynamic Range Matters

hyper-dynamic range compression takes a tool out of the toolbox and there's no reason to do it. Making music louder just for the sake of being loud simply degrades the overall quality of sound. Dynamic range in a song is like contrast in a photo. High contrast means that there's a stark difference between dark and light, loud and soft. But when music has had all of the dynamics drained out of it, it's like the contrast is stuck at its lowest setting. The image becomes gray, flat, and lifeless.
