Your Brain Is Telling Its Story All the Time

The way to think about it is that your brain is telling itself stories all the time. It's trying to make sense of the sensory signals that it's receiving. And ultimately, there is no physical signal in your body or in the world that has an inherent biological emotional meaning. Any signal becomes meaningful in an ensemble of other signals. So when someone is scowling at you, your brain has to make that meaningful, has to make a guess.
