This is the first time two aircraft carrier, armed fleets face each other. The japanese are much more experienced in that regard and theyhave been fighting with each other a lot longer. Both admirals are sort of winging it, if you'll pardon the pun. They're going to learn a lot if you actually get granular though, and study what's in olved in carrier warfare. This is not like little raids. This is the full blown thing.
