West: There's a spectrum of ways in which speech can be used scientifically. He says on the one hand, there's what you could call oral dialectic. On the other hand, he says, we have written rhetoric like Lisius had done or other people have done. West: You have a kind of a continuum here between oral dialectic and written rhetoric. The lover begets upon the beloved by impregnating the beloved with the seed of knowledge.
