After the chan denasty, confucianism really wasr i cant rember if you so, pushed away. There was a very strong belief that all these western categories, like philosophy, like literature, like art, should also be taught in China. And everything that didn't fit, for example, the neighborhood temple or the spirit medium who would have revelations from the gods, things like that, they would not and they would be deemed inappropriate. I think that is really what happened at the end of the chain dynasty, into the republican era, and then later in the communist era.
