The Role of Solicitor Generals in Technical Cases
The court is not especially disposed, I would say, to get deeply into the technical weeds. The solicitor general plays a narrower, very important role of being the chief appellate lawyer in the attorney general's office. In some states like New York, it's a much larger solicitor general unit and they handle themselves all or virtually all of the state's appeals. There is no state where the solicitor general is separately elected,. though I believe in Puerto Rico, the solicitor General is separately appointed by the legislature.
