The Importance of Public Property
In 1932, export levels would drastically decrease from around 5.2 million tons the year before to just 1.73 million. There were also reports leaking out of the most affected regions that theft of food was on the rise as people were reaching their breaking point. By the end of 1932, over 100,000 people had received those ten year sentences for stealing food, and around 4,500 had been executed under the new laws. Unfortunately, 1933 was going to be worse.
