Maryland in the Civil War
The first blood drawn in the civil war was in baltimore, when a crowd of southern sympathizers attacked a regiment of german immigrant union troops. There was a lot of confederate sympathy in maryland and raphael sems started his career as a privateer. He didn't think, we're americans too, as they say now. He thought, you know, i hate the Americans. And all those things combined to make him, by the time the war started, fanatically pro southern, fanatically anti American.
