The idea that Russia will somehow be more benign after Putin or easier to deal with is a strong possibility but it may not be a probability. I see no reason to suppose that Russia might not either shrink into a radical nationalist Russia led by someone perhaps even less rational and even more dangerous than Putin has proved to be. If the Ukrainians are able to seriously fundamentally threaten Crimea absolutely I think Putin could be in a lot of trouble because Crimea is not eastern Ukraine and goes back to Russian historical romanticism.
