During Justinian's time, the Gassanids and Lakmids will be the key players. Both were monophysite Christians who had established themselves in northwest Jordan on the borders of the Byzantine world. The future Lakmid king Al-Mundihir ibn al-Numman III took part in a great raid on Byzantine Syria during the war in 503. To the north, the situation in Armenia had been stable since 428. By Zantium controlled one-fifth of the kingdom, which was ruled by various important Armenian families.
