People answer the question in a surface way or at least intend to they give a lot away if you're paying attention. Over time I have added one word to the question and found this word to be extremely valuable: 'How are you really' It immediately shifts us from this surface world which is polite and safe and nonessential to a place where you might have a real conversation. Sometimes just from that question alone people have revealed amazing things about themselves.
