The Compromise of 1877

A group of Hayes' Republican allies from Ohio and a group of Southerners met at the Wormley House Hotel in Washington. The Southerners promised that black civil rights would still be protected if federal troops were removed. Many of the demands detailed by Keller were never acted on, and Democrats in Congress still fought the results. On March 5th, Rutherford B. Hayes was inaugurated President of the United States.
