What Are Harpies?

Some versions of the myths, especially the roman literature, say that they washed up on the shores of naples and southern italy. But as far as i can tell, there isn't any archaeological evidence for that. They're not really ever seen as helpers. There's a few examples of grave reliefs where they may be harpies on them, but usually they're sirens. So maybe they did play a role in some of those things, and we just don't know, cause we know so little about what transpired.
