In 1836, there were only 30 thousand hispanics living in new mexico. And about four thousand in texas. The governor of california complained the mexican government was barbaric. He would say that the americans would use the land better than the mexicans. So they start to see the potential for agriculture and mining at these sparsely populated lands.
