Bentham's Panopticon

Bentham's famous Panopticon is a prison structure where one guard can... Panopticon from an elevated turret look into all of the cells of all of the prisoners at once. Michel Foucault criticizes this as early iteration of disciplinary technology that we've since developed to give people this feeling of being accountable or being watched by something social. For Bentham, the British are impervious to the particular situation of Bengali society. And thus the application of British laws to India he sees as a recipe for despotism on the part of the Europeans.
