The Importance of Wallerstein's World Systems Theory
He was born and raised in New York City, graduated three times from Columbia with a B.A., M.A., and PhD. Then also worked at Columbia for a while, but in the 60s was rather what he would refer to himself as a political sociologist. He really tried to explain how the world turned into the world we know today. His world systems theory or analysis is something I would consider a valuable tool for all kinds of systematic approaches to explain larger developments from a global perspective.
