The Debate on Tariffs

On January 19, 1830, U.S. senators gathered in the crowded frigid Senate chamber. The issue at hand is tariffs and Senator Daniel Webster of Massachusetts was pitted against Senator Robert Hain of South Carolina. "If slavery be an evil, we of the present day found it ready-made to our hands," he said. To this day, it's often considered the most famous speech ever given on the floor of the US Senate.
