In an effort to avoid offending or turning off potential advertisers, publishers started to get out of the business of weighing in on partisan politics. And so papers actually became less expensive and then, you know, make money off of the advertising. It wasn't until the end of the 1800s, early 1900s that it really sort of settled in as a standard for what a reporter is.
