A collapse of public confidence over immigration, high levels of distrust in the system and a strong sense among many voters that an issue they really cared about was not being taken seriously by people in westminster. Those were basically the conditions. People no longer see labor or the conservatives as the preferred political party. There's a palpable sense in the country that politics is no longer speaking to a large chunk of the country. And there are new issues that people really want to talk about, but they can sense that the political establishment doesn't really want to discuss them.
